Samsung recently unveiled its latest addition to its Android series of smartphones – the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2. The biggest difference in this unveiling was that the Galaxy Grand 2 was not a high-end premium smartphone that would require you to spend a lot of money in order to be able to get one.
Instead, the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is a mid-segment smartphone with premium looks and a decent enough hardware configuration to make it shine in the mid-segment market. So how good is the new Samsung Galaxy Grand 2? Where does it stand in the market today and should you think of buying one? If you are looking out for these answers, this post will help you do just that.
Today we check out the key specifications and features of the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2. We will check out every important aspect of the smartphone and find out whether we have a winner at hand or whether the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is just another mid-segment smartphone that you do not need to care about.
Samsung Galaxy Grand 2
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has a 5.25-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a pixel density of 280 ppi. So even if we compare this display resolution to the Samsung Galaxy Grand and Galaxy Mega 5.8, the Galaxy Grand 2 proves to be better by a much bigger margin.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 runs on a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, standard GPU and has 1.5GB of RAM. So once again, there is a major upgrade in the processing system of the Galaxy Grand 2 when compared to the original Galaxy Grand and even the Galaxy Mega 5.8.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. This is great news for mid-segment consumers because they won’t have to wait for this latest update to come to their devices. Even though Android 4.4 KitKat happens to be the latest version of Android operating system, many consumers in the market are still waiting to get the Android 4.3 Jelly update for their smartphones.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has 8GB of internal storage and has a microSD card support. Hence consumers will be able to expand storage by up to 64GB as and when they wish using a microSD card. So even though the internal storage capacity might not be big enough, the microSD card slot backs it up.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has an 8 MP primary camera with autofocus and LED flash and a 1.9 MP secondary camera. The primary camera supports 1080p video recording at 30fps and comes with features like geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization.
Mid-segment smartphones available in the market today either come with a 5MP primary camera or an 8MP primary camera, so Samsung has done a great job in case of the Galaxy Grand 2.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has a removable 2600 mAh Li-Ion battery. So in spite of being slimmer and lighter (in a way) than the Galaxy Grand as well as having a form factor much smaller than the Galaxy Mega 5.8, the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 manages to pack a 2600mAh battery!
As of now, we do not have the official battery performance stats, but you can expect the 2600 mAh battery to perform better than what the Galaxy Grand was able to do with its 2100 mAh battery.
The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 are 146.8 x 75.3 x 8.9 mm. It is worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has a much smaller bezel and adapts the same sleek design of the Galaxy S4. This mid-segment smartphone is just 1 mm thicker than the Galaxy S4, which also happens to be the slimmest high-end smartphone from the company.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 weighs 163 grams. This definitely is a lot more weight when compared to high-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the Apple iPhone 5S. But when you compare it to any other mid-segment smartphone like the Galaxy Grand or Galaxy Mega 5.8, the Galaxy Grand 2 proves to be a winner once again!
To be honest, this is one of the best reviews we have ever written. And before you readers start thinking that we have been paid by Samsung, we want to list out the reasons why we think that the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 ‘could’ prove to be one of the best mid-segment Android smartphones in the market today.
Unlike the Apple iPhone 5C, which was expected to be a mid-segment smartphone but came with a huge price tag, we expect Samsung to do exactly the opposite. You have to agree, the Galaxy Grand 2 is a great smartphone (don’t forget the faux leather back cover that adds a premium look and finish to the device) and has almost everything you would want in a mid-segment smartphone.
So the battle is half won, but the other half decides the faith of this smartphone! Samsung has to ensure that the Galaxy Grand 2 has the correct price tag, which will be the deciding factor for consumers with a low or limited budget.
Finally, here is the list that we were talking about. Go through it and do let us know if you agree or disagree with us. Let us know if you want us to add a new point here or delete any of the mentioned ones (we are always ready to listen to you):
- Quad-core processor
- 720p display resolution
- Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
- 2600 mAh battery
- Premium design and finish
- MicroSD card support up to 64GB
