Apple is definitely going to release a new TV box this year, but is it going to be something to get excited about? The company itself says the new TV box is not going to represent a completely new system. In addition, the Cupertino-based company has stated that the new Apple TV box is nothing more, but a minor hardware change.
Apple confirmed they filed new paperwork with the Federal Communications Commission due to the minor change in the device’s components. Apple’s spokesperson gave The Verge a statement on the new TV box:
“We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don’t affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.”
Apple has also denied the rumor that the new box will be smaller than the previous one. There’s no redesign included, it’s the same TV box with the same dimensions, there’s only a minor change in its internal components. Apple adds the new TV box shouldn’t be taken as a fourth-generation TV box.
The list of changed components most probably includes an upgrade to an A5X processor, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, sources close to Apple say new Apple TV will keep the same size and if everything goes well, it will hit shelves very soon.
Another rumor concerning Apple TV is the one that suggests an HBO Go app for the box is coming later this year, probably somewhere in the middle of 2013. Analysts say the addition of the HBO Go app may make the TV box highly desirable and appealing to customers. Reports say Apple is currently negotiating with Time Warner and the app should be ready to use by the middle of this year.
Apple hasn’t confirmed this rumor and refused to give a statement on it, so this is considered to be just a rumor so far.
