Best Gaming Laptops of the year 2013 – Specs, Pros, Cons and everything you need to know about them (Review)

[adsads2resp]?

When it comes to gaming, people always tend to go with consoles. Gaming consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation series always provide real-time gaming experience in an affordable price. However, the gaming experience offered by a desktop is top-notch and consoles do not come even close it. But what about gaming laptops?

Generally people do not invest much into gaming laptops/desktops considering the high price and instead go with the fairly cheaper alternative – a gaming console! The initial cost of consoles is less, but if you do the proper calculations, then you will find that you end up paying the same amount of a PC by making stupid game purchases. The numbers of enthusiasts that still prefer PC gaming to any consoles are not less. They know the true quality and the experience that a game offers on PC.

Making the power come with you, laptop makers decided to provide the same experience in laptops. With introduction of gaming laptops, you can have the same PC gaming experience wherever you go. Portability being the major plus point, gamers can now have their LAN-party sessions anywhere they want. A desktop will always stand more powerful than a gaming laptop, however, gaming laptops are still a way to go if portability needs to be consider. They provide the same PC gaming experience that too without compromising much of the frame rate.

A gaming laptop needs to be specially configured for gaming needs. To make it clear, not everyone these days want or need a special gaming laptop. Normal laptops these days are equipped with powerful graphics and equivalent processor that can easily handle most of the recent games. Still, manufacturers are keen in making a laptop with heavy configuration that is specially designed for gaming. The gaming laptops handle the exact same games, and at the same time provide some extra performance that an enthusiast expects.

Gaming laptops can equally handle all other tasks with equal ease. There’s no such task that gaming laptop cannot handle (hyperbole). But, a configure that can handle gaming can handle all other tasks such as – productivity, video playback, video editing as well as photo editing.

In comparison with other laptops gaming laptops require excess power to run. That’s because of the powerful hardware residing inside it. Even doing a usual work like web surfing on a gaming laptop will require more power as compared to a non-gaming laptop.

The powerful hardware is also power hungry and that’s why it is necessary to provide ample power to get optimized performance. With this being one of the major requirements, gaming laptops struggle when it comes to battery life. On many gaming notebooks if you consider doing usual stuff on a gaming laptop (other than gaming) the battery will be able to last up to 5 hours. But it doesn’t provide same battery backup while gaming.

Even after knowing all this, if you are planning to make a gaming laptop purchase, let me make it clear they don’t come cheap. Now that being said, lets have a look at the best gaming laptops of 2013.

1. Origin EON17-SLX

1-Origin EON17-SLX

Origin enters the gaming laptop race with EON17-SLX. Made for absolute gaming, it can be a desktop replacement. EON17-SLX is a performance powerhouse because of its top-notch components and insane specifications. It starts at $1966, and for the price provides a really basic configuration which is not worth the price. An Origin EON17-SLX should only be purchased if you want an insanely powerful machine.

This is the most powerful laptop that I have come across (when configured). This extreme laptop features Intel Extreme Edition Core i7-4930MX processor, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz RAM, Dual Nvidia GTX 780M 4GB graphics, 2 x 480GB mSATA SSD, 2 x 1TB hard disk drive and (1920 x 1080) 17.3″ SLX FHD LED display. This laptop has enough power to blow up a city (in the gaming world of course)!

Origin offers this mind-blowing configuration for $5,731. One can get an equally powerful desktop for half the price. It is completely customizable and if you want you can eliminate some components or even choose the low capacity option. The Extreme Edition processor is only recommended if you are an ultra hard core gamer. We would not recommend it as on laptops a normal Core i7-4900M is also an over kill.

It offers something that Alienware does not offer in its 17-inch model – the dual graphic cards. If you want fairly high frame rates in your gameplay, then you can assign this task to the dual graphic cards. In addition to this, you can ask Origin to factory overclock your graphics card for $50. Since it is factory overclocked, Origin guarantees the stability of your system. Origin EON17-SLX beats Alienware 18 in terms of performance. With, mind-boggling specs and extra ordinary performance we pick it as the best gaming laptop for the season.

3. MSI Dragon Edition 2 Extreme

3-MSI Dragon Edition 2 Extreme
Back in June, [amzlnk_replacer]?. It sports a eye-catching fiery red color outer-shell scheme, beveled edge and modernize looks. Its not just dressed to impress. The configuration stands apart from what most gaming laptop offer at this price. It sports a fourth generation Intel Core i7-4930MX processor, configurable DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Nvidia GTX 780M 4GB graphics, Up to 384GB Super RAID 2 + 750GB HDD and 17.3-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display.

The processor is already overclocked to whopping 4.1GHz by MSI, so no need to do it yourself. The cooling is maintained by Cooler Boost 2 technology, which easily handles the overclock. The RAM is configurable, and you can get a 16GB or 32GB variant according to your need and budget.

The specifications are too good for a laptop. The processor is robust and can outperform other competitors at this price. The GTX 780 GPU comes with 1536 CUDA cores that offer top-notch gaming performance. Super RAID 2 is MSI’s way to put three 128GB SSD in RAID 0 configuration. This setup eventually provides transfer speed of 1500MB/s.

The 17.3-inch display uses a twisted pneumatic panel instead of an IPS panel. The color reproduction is still up to the mark even if looked from extreme angles. It also supports Exclusive Matrix Display for Multiple Devices technology by MSI. Along with this there is a Mini Display Port 1.2 and HDMI 1.4a port that can handle screens up to 4K resolution.

The MSI Dragon Edition 2 Extreme starts with a pleasing price tag of $1,500 and can go as high as $3,000 if configured with all possible high-end components. Even so even if you tune up this gaming laptop to the ultimate level, you still save a lot of money compared to the two devices mentioned above.

4. Clevo P150SM

4-Clevo P150SM
Followed to the Alienware 18, the next in our list it the Clevo P150SM. The band may sound unfamiliar for you, but let me tell you that Clevo is reputed Computers Company that manufacturers laptops since 1990.

The [amzlnk_replacer]? may not look like a gaming laptop if you compare it with Alienware 18. It totally looks like a business laptop with pleasing aesthetics. It is completely customizable; it’s like buying an assembled laptop with your own hardware choice. The configuration that we use includes, fourth generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ running at 2.4GHz, 8GB Dual Channel RAM, a 240GB SSD, 1TB Seagate (SSD + HDD), Nvidia GTX 780M graphics and 15.4-inch display.

The configuration looks promising and can easily handle majority of the games at ‘high-settings’. One thing that I liked about this laptop is its wide customization options. A vendor can offer different customization choices for almost every component with the most suitable alternative. The MYTHLOGIC Pollux 1613 lets you customize your entire laptop with wide range of options.

It even lets you choose between Nvidia GPU or AMD GPU, this is the thing that very few laptops offer. Along with this, there is an option to add two solid-state drives and two hard disk drives. It is one of the most versatile laptop that I have come across.

The highest possible configuration of Pollux 1613 will cost you $4,341.84. It includes, fourth generation Intel Core i7-4930MQ running at 3.0GHz, 32GB Dual Channel RAM at 1600MHz, 2 x 512GB SSD, 2 x 1TB hard disk drive, Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M 4GB graphics and 15.6-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) Matte 95% NTSC Color Gamut LED Backlit LCD display.

5. Alienware 17

71x3yM0dXnL._SL1500_

[adsads1resp]?

[amzlnk_replacer]? is the next iteration of laptop from the game makers. It’s a complete new family that features drastic redesign and powerful hardware. It is our recommended option if you want a top-notch portable gaming laptop for a relatively low price than Alienware 18.

Having exquisite design, one will definitely choose this over the unpretentious Clevo P150SM. It starts from $1,499 for the basic model and $3,199 for customized highest variant. Like Alienware 18, it is available in three variant to choose from. The basic model costs $1,499, the mid-end model costs $1,849 and the high-end model costs $2,099. All the three variants are customizable.

It is affordable as compared to Alienware 18, and if you are budget constrained we will definitely recommend the Alienware 17 to you. The ideal one for gaming would be the high-end model that has, fourth generation Core i7 4800MQ, 16GB DDR3 RAM at 1600MHz, 80GB mSATA SSD caching + 750GB SATA hard disk drive, Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M and 17.3-inch WLED Full HD (1920 x 1080) display.

The following configuration is the high-end model with customized graphics. It will cost you $2,499. However, the 80GB SSD is not sufficient for most tasks so you might consider getting a larger SSD. Alienware 17 differs from Alienware 18 by one inch, but the overall difference between the two is significant. Being a bigger laptop, Alienware 18 can fit two graphic cards and two hard disk drives simultaneously.

It provides best of the performance on a single graphic card with ‘BioShock Infinite’ and other popular game titles running on high settings at 1080p. This is something that one will splurge his money for.

6-CyberPower FangBook EVO HX7-200
CyberPower is one the best gaming laptop manufacturers. [amzlnk_replacer]? provides optimized performance and enhanced gaming experience in an affordable price range. All the laptops from the FangBook series feature a massive 17.3-inch display that makes it not so easy to carry.

There are many manufacturers that offer pure gaming laptops, and have already discussed couple of them, but what makes CyberPower FangBook stand apart is its price. CyberPower FangBook EVO HX7-200 is a brilliantly designed laptop that provides best gaming performance for its price.

At a price of $1,589 it offers Intel Core i7-4700MQ running at 2.4GHz, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Nvidia GTX 770M 3GB, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 17.3-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) LED-Backlit display. And at the aforementioned price tag, this really is a jaw-dropping hardware configuration. This configuration can easily handle most of the games at maxed-out settings. The GTX 770M is fairly sizeable step down from the GTX 780M, so you can also consider adding $366 more and getting 4GB GTX 780M.

However, even with GTX 770M it handles everything that you throw at it with ease. The battery life appears to be increased than the previous version because of the Haswell processor. Along with gaming, it is also good for watching Blu-ray movies. The 17.3-inch gorgeous display and stereo speakers with integrated subwoofer delivers a superior movie watching experience.

Like all other manufacturers, CyberPower also offers wide-customization options. 7. Razer Blade (14-inch)

7-Razer Blade (14-inch)

Razer’s step in making gaming laptops after keyboard and mice was rewarding. After closely knowing the needs of a gamer, Razer made its first generation of gaming laptop that was portable in the real sense. This year, Razer decided to make a Blade family with introduction of two laptops – Razer Blade 14-inch and 17-inch Razer Blade Pro. The 17-inch Razer Blade Pro is a successor of last year’s Razer Blade laptop.

The newly introduced [amzlnk_replacer]? undergoes a redesign process that makes it small and easy to carry. It is dubbed as the “world’s thinnest gaming laptop” by Razer. This ultra thin gaming laptop houses a fourth generation Intel Core i7-4702HQ 2.2GHz processor, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Nvidia GTX 765M 2GB graphics, 128GB / 256GB / 512GB SSD and 14.0-inch (1600 x 900) LED-backlight display.

Razer does not offer wide customization options. The Razer Blade 14-inch is available in three variants – 128GB for $1,799, 256GB for $1,999 and 512GB for $2,299. The specification is not so robust as compared to the other laptops we discussed. But, it can definitely handle all the games on the 14-inch screen at ‘medium to high’ settings. If you are not an enthusiast and want a sexy looking laptop to suffice your gaming needs on the go, then we will say Razer Blade 14-inch is the best option.

8. Razer Blade Pro (17-inch)

8-Razer Blade Pro (17-inch)
If you want a more powerful machine with an innovative ‘Switchblade LCD display’ there is [amzlnk_replacer]?. It follows the same design pattern as its predecessor and includes current generation hardware. It comes with fourth generation Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.2GHz processor, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Nvidia GTX 765M 2GB graphics, 128GB / 256GB / 512GB SSD and 17.3-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) LED-backlight display.

LCD trackpad (and your second display)

The 17-inch Razer Blade Pro has similar configuration as the 14-inch Blade, except the processor and screen size. Additionally, it includes a revolutionary LCD trackpad that lets you have all your weapons at your fingertips. This is one feature that is extremely difficult to find and cool enough to get addicted to. The LCD trackpad has special keys on the top side that be customized by users. You can set them to open up different applications and can also be used to quickly access important functions and features of the application that is current running.

You can also run your apps on the trackpad itself, which will therefore act as a second screen on your laptop. The buttons on the top side will provide you buttons and menus that will help you use the app or service that is currently running on the trackpad. And the best part is that your game will continue loading on the main screen, whereas the laptop speakers will still be there to serve you. So for instance, if you are checking out YouTube videos on your trackpad, the main speakers will play the sound for that video!

The 17-inch Blade Pro is also available in same three variants, but costs more than the 14-inch Blade. The prices are as follows: 128GB version for $2,299, 256GB version for $2,499 and 512GB version for $2,799. It is not as slim as the 14-inch Blade, and also not worth the extra price.

10. ASUS ROG G750JX

10-ASUS ROG G750JX
ROG (Republic of Gamers), solely the gaming components family by ASUS brings a powerful [amzlnk_replacer]?, which is our next pick. Made especially for gaming, this laptop features powerful hardware that is definitely enough for many gaming fans. The design is not that impressive, and the laptop looks a bit chunky, which majority of people will not like. It is thick and beefy which reminds us of the original Xbox console.

All these components along with the cooling mechanism add weight to it. It is portable, but weighs 4.8kg and that’s why you will not like to carry it you. The screen is impressive and provides better viewing angles, which is necessary from a gaming point of view, although this is a non-IPS display.

ROG G750 is impeccable in performance; it boasts a powerful fourth generation Core i7-4700HQ 3.4GHz processor, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, Nvidia GTX 770M 3GB graphics, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD and 17.3-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) display. With this configuration on the board, there are very few games that can challenge the system to run at 1080p.

The cooling mechanism includes dual fans to keep the heat low while running heavy games. Also, it is included with SoundBooster technology from Asus that enhances sound coming out from the built-in speakers for real gaming experience. Although it has a power hungry configuration, the battery backup is perfectly maintained. Some credits behind this go to Intel for its tweaked thermal architecture in Haswell processor.

Overall, ASUS ROG G750JX is a great laptop for its price. It starts from $1,800 and the price by the way you customize it. Gaming laptops with similar configuration from other manufacturers cost lot more. So if you are comfortable with such a beefy design and weight, then getting it is a steal.

11. Lenovo IdeaPad Y500

11-Lenovo IdeaPad Y500
With so many gaming laptops around, the solely laptop maker, Lenovo doesn’t lie behind. [amzlnk_replacer]? is Lenovo’s attempt to offer gaming laptop at an affordable price. It’s great for those who want more than a feature-light ultrabook.

Aesthetically it is a chunky laptop that features a gaming makeover. The sharp design and funky red keyboard backlight is an upgrade from Lenovo’s business class laptops. Overall, the design is neat and good, unlike some beefy laptops we discussed earlier.

What makes it cheap and affordable are its specs. It’s not a pure gaming laptop, but a standard laptop with upper high-level specs and revamped aesthetics. Internally it has a third generation Core i7-3630QM processor, Dual Nvidia 650M 2GB graphics, 8/16GB DDR3 RAM, 16GB mSATA SSD + 1TB HDD and 15.6-inch (1366 x 768) display.

It is not a basic configuration, but not a high-end as well. The dual graphic cards make it compatible to handle most games at 1366 x 768 resolution. The third generation Core processor is powerful, but requires large power as compared to fourth gen. Operating system will alone eat up the 16GB SSD storage, making it completely redundant. However, it will speed up the boot timing of your laptop.

Making it clear, this is not a pure gaming laptop, but the configuration supports majority of the game titles easily. Lenovo offers IdeaPad Y500 for just $1,249, making it the cheapest and most affordable gaming laptop for the season.

So this completes our list of best gaming laptops for the 2013 holiday season. By this time you may have known that gaming laptops are themselves redundant. And there is a lot of competition involved, but the difference in price tags should help you identify the model that you would want to get.

Laptops are known for their portability and ability to carry them anywhere you want easily. Gaming laptops kills this in the first place by the way they are designed. If you end up purchasing a gaming laptop, then you will hardly transport it anywhere. It will be lying just on your desk or around your home. Instead, I would strongly suggest you to know your requirement and question yourself, why do you need a gaming laptop?

If by any way desktop is going to be in the alternative list, it is strongly recommended that you buy a desktop. Buying a desktop will not only provide better performance, but also save half of your money that you are willing to spend on a gaming laptop.

If you are convinced about getting a gaming laptop and planning on getting one, then I would recommend not spending more than $2,000 for it and go with the mid-end budget laptop. From our list I would suggest to go with any of these: Clevo P150SM, CyberPower FangBook EVO HX7-200, Toshiba Qosmio X75-A7298, MSI Dragon Edition 2 Extreme or Lenovo IdeaPad Y500.

The machines listed above should be good enough for a majority of gamers out there. But if you are looking for the ultimate package and don’t mind spending a lot of money, then you are free to choose from the top contenders of our list.

The configurations these laptops offer are more than enough for majority of the games to run at high settings. Also, these laptops are configurable so you can add or remove any component that you want.

The Alienware series and the Razer series are more of a hype and are just over-powered gaming laptops. The maximum screen size one could have on a laptop is 18-inch and these high-end GPU’s will be bottlenecked on such a small display. So the point here is that you really don’t need to get all of that hardware and power.

Some laptops also offer 4K video out; it would make sense if you have a 4K HDTV, which I bet you wont. Coming back to the GPU performance, the overpowered GPU provides better frame rates on a small screen, so I advise you to connect it to a 32-inch or larger HDTV to enjoy its true essence. Its not the gaming that is primary need of everyone on a laptop, but everyone want his or her machine to run at least the latest game title available in the market.

And, most $1000+ laptops these days are equipped with powerful processor and graphics combination that can easily run it. As I have already said, no one particularly wants pure gaming laptops. Hard core gamers and enthusiasts are already settled with their monstrous rigs while other prefer gaming console.
