French carrier SFR has announced Android 4.4 KitKat update plans for its Galaxy handsets- Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.
Samsung has been silent on the KitKat 4.4 update details but that didn’t stop SFR from posting a message on its smartphone blog that the KitKat 4.4 update will be available next year between late January and early February. Although the exact date is not mentioned, the company states that the dates will be confirmed once they have sufficient information from their software department that handles the KitKat project.
KitKat 4.4 is the latest version of Android that has been optimised to work on low-end devices as well. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was released in September and was the last device to receive Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Samsung Galaxy S4 that was released in April with Android 4.2 and was updated to Android 4.3 only recently.
With several Samsung devices receiving their Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update all we can do is sit back and enjoy it while the KitKat version makes its way to our handsets. Good thing is Galaxy S4 Google Play edition is already running the latest KitKat version.
Right now SFR is the only carrier that has sent out an Android 4.4 KitKat release update for Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3. Knowing that Samsung generally remains silent on the release schedule till the dates are finalised, we can expect an announcement from them any time soon.
News from SFR has given us a rough timeframe when we can start expecting the updates. Also, with the rollout for KitKat happening in France we expect the global release of KitKat around the same time. In U.S. however, one can expect a few delays due to the U.S. carrier restrictions that may stretch the timeframe further till all requirements are met.
One can expect to see TouchWiz upgrades, enhancements and fixes along with the software upgrade. Let’s wait and watch-out for more news on this one.
