New specification for universal laptop charger announced by IEC, will reduce e-waste

You would have definitely wished sometime that there was a universal standard for laptop chargers so that you need not carry it everywhere and just plug it to the nearest charger available either at your friends place or at office. Your wish may soon come true as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a worldwide standards group has announced the “IEC Technical Specification 62700: DC Power supply for notebook computer”. In plain terms, they have introduced a laptop charger format that will be compatible across all laptops and end incompatibility issues.

With the huge number of laptops being used across the world and thousands more being sold by the moment you finish reading this sentence, it is easy to imagine the magnitude of e-waste being generated every second. Hence such a standard will not only lead to less hassles for you as a consumer but also be much more beneficial to Mother Nature.

The IEC was also responsible for microUSB to become the standard format for smartphone chargers and hence we are enthusiastic about this news. Speaking on the announcement, IEC General Secretary and CEO Frans Vreeswijk said,

The IEC International Standards for the universal charger for mobile phones has been widely adopted by the mobile phone industry and is already starting to help reduce e-waste.  A single power supply covering a wide range of notebook computers is the next step in lowering e-waste and its impact on our planet. I am proud that the IEC has yet again managed to make the best possible technical solution available.

The universal laptop charger specification will be out by early 2014 and will cover “critical aspects of external chargers for notebook computers, their connector and plug, as well as safety, interoperability, performance and environmental considerations.”

An obvious advantage of such a specification would be that you would not have to worry about buying a specific charger for your laptop model in case your existing charger stops working.

At this moment, we do not have pictures of the proposed universal laptop charger. More details will emerge when the specification is formally launched.
