We have great news for Samsung fans and consumer who have been waiting for the company’s next-gen series of smart devices. Samsung has officially announced 4GB of DDR4 RAM for mobile devices and this new piece of technology will most probably be seen in Samsung Galaxy devices next year.
We all have been wondering about how great the next generation of smartphones would be. We already had the best of display (1080 x 1920 pixels), we had a variety of screen sizes ranging from 4-inches to 6-inches, we had the best of processors (Apple A7, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, 805 and more) and almost everything else that we dreamed of a few years ago.
But the year 2014 will be the time when all of this becomes old school! The next generation of smartphones is almost here and it’s soon going to explode and take over the smartphone and tablet industry. Samsung has already been one of the key players in this revolution as the company was among the first few to come with an octa-core chipset and curved display. But it’s now time to take things to a completely different level.
So coming back to the topic we are discussing, Samsung has finally given a holiday gift for its fans and consumers by announcing the LPDDR4 mobile DRAM chip. This chip has a capacity of 8 Gb (that’s 1 GB) and also happens to be the first in the mobile industry. The most interesting part about this new mobile RAM chip is that it can fit a very high-density bits module on a single die. That’s 8 Gigabits on a single die, and when you combine four such dies together, you get a value that was never seen before in the industry – 4GB of DDR4 mobile memory.
It is worth noting that this is a value that has not been achieved commercially as of date. This new RAM chip has been fabricated on the 20nm manufacturing process and are much more efficient than the previous generation. If you are interested in the actual numbers, you will be happy to know that the new mobile LPDDR4 chips are almost 50 percent faster and consume 40 percent lesser power compared to the RAM chips that are used in most of the high-end smart devices today, the LPDDR3 memory.
“This next-generation LPDDR4 DRAM will contribute significantly to faster growth of the global mobile DRAM market, which will soon comprise the largest share of the entire DRAM market,” said Young-Hyun Jun, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics.
We know that these words are absolutely true, and we look forward to the time when we will actually be able to check out this new RAM chip in mobile devices. Once again, we want to present some numbers to you. You will be amazed to know that the data transfer speeds of the new 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM chip can go as high as 3200 Mbps per pin, that’s almost double of what we can achieve with the current generation LPDDR3 DRAM chips.
Last but not the least, these new RAM chips will not only be used in smartphones and tablets. Samsung already offers a wide range of devices, and wants to put this new piece of technology to optimum use. So you can even expect these low-power consuming, ultra-fast RAM chips to be used in notebooks and possibly chromebooks as well. Samsung said that these 4GB RAM modules will be used in “UHD smartphones, tablets and ultra-slim notebooks.”
Consumers who have been waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be happy to know that this new RAM chip will also be a part of that upcoming flagship device. To add to the excitement, the Galaxy S5 will also be equipped with the 64-bit CPU enabled Exynos chipset that will be able to use this new RAM module to the fullest. So let’s wait and watch, the fun part has just begun!
