After facing tough competition for iPhone from big screen smartphones, Apple has finally decided to release a pair of large screen display iPhones this year.

The largest screen so far from Apple comes with iPhone 5 with 4-inch display. If sources who shared the information with Wall Street Journal are to be believed then we would soon see two large screen display models of the iPhones being released by Apple by the second half. One model would measure larger than 4½ inches diagonally and the other one would come with a screen bigger than 5 inches.

Both the handsets are expected to have a metal casting similar to the current models and the plastic shell of iPhone 5C would be done away with due to weak demand. Sources said that both the devices will not feature a curved display which the rival Samsung and LG introduced recently.

Apple definitely needs a larger-screen smartphone soon, particularly to address the demand in the emerging markets,” observes Canalys analyst Jessica Kwee. Big screen devices are becoming popular with more and more users preferring to use handsets to play games, surf the net or watch videos. Large screen devices are very popular in China which is a strategic and large market for Apple’s growth plans. With Apple losing its market share to big screen smartphones it was getting difficult for Cupertino to ignore this feature.

Although we saw the iPhone screen size increasing to 4 inches from 3½ inches in 2012, it still lacks behind its competitors in terms of screen size when compared to the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy S4 and 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3. We have been hearing a lot of speculation and rumours about large screen displays from Apple and the recent report in WSJ only reconfirms it.

Sources have added a word of caution here stating that the plans are not final and may undergo some changes. It seems that the smaller device is being readied for mass production whereas the bigger device is still in the initial stages of development. Apple has declined to comment on these speculations.
