It looks like Best Buy wants to get rid of Microsoft’s original Surface Pro, dropping $400 off the retail price. The hybrid PC/tablet is on sale for $499 and we believe Best Buy will continue this deal, until they are out of stock.
The Surface Pro has been out for around a year now and the Surface Pro 2 succeeded the tablet. Even though it has not been on the shelves for that long, we cannot see Microsoft wanting to keep the device around, and neither does Best Buy.
Microsoft didn’t do much to change the Surface Pro 2 from the original, for $499 it is a really good buy and just a little under the level of the MacBook Air and Lenovo Yoga, in our opinion.
The old model doesn’t have the adjustable kickstand or the new internals, most notably the step up to the Haswell chipset, with more battery life and a little more raw graphical power.
Still, the Surface Pro comes with a 10.6-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel display, Intel i5 Ivy Bridge processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage and a Wacom stylus – for $499, it is better than anything else on the market.
We have obviously all heard about Microsoft failing with the Surface RT, sinking $900 million into a project with no real return. The Surface Pro was not advertised and Microsoft did not make as many units, but we still believe Microsoft failed to gain any traction with their more expensive version.
Microsoft has yet to reveal sales for the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, considering Apple still has around 60% of the market and Android tablets are starting to take over, it may be a few more years before RT and Windows 8 tablets are accepted.
