Facebook has revealed that they were experiencing problems with hackers and were a victim of a ‘sophisticated hack attack’. Reportedly, the popular social network was a target of the attack last month, but it was added that user data was exposed to any kind of danger.
Facebook posted a note and said the following:
“Last month, Facebook Security discovered that our systems had been targeted in a sophisticated attack. This attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised. The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops. The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software. As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day.
We have found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised.”
So, although Facebook was a target of an attack, they assure us users were not affected by it whatsoever. Currently, there is no information on the hackers’ identities. Facebook was a victim of several hack attacks and it followed the announcements of other popular websites, such as Twitter, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Facebook user data was maybe not compromised this time, but this could somehow serve as a warning for those who enjoy spending time on this social network. If you’re a user, try to reset your password regularly and make sure you have a good anti-virus software, so you can keep your computer away from potential online danger.
This just proves our online safety can be put into question anytime we think we’ve done everything in our power to protect our online data. Another thing we have to remember is trying to avoid suspicious web sites that are potentially harmful and seem questionable.
Facebook has taken all the necessary measures regarding the case, including the start of an investigation.
