Facebook knows the perfect way to send invitations for its events, drawing all the attention to itself. This time, “A small team has been working on a big idea, Join us for coffee and learn about a new product” has done the trick. This comes right after the official launch of the hashtag on Facebook.
What is the announcement that Facebook has to make on June 20? What’s next from the world’s biggest and most popular social network? We’ll find out in few days.
The event will take place on Thursday in its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. According to the invitation sent through e-mail to all the press members, Facebook wrote they will unveil a brand new product. Facebook didn’t share anymore details about it.
I wonder what they have to announce this time. Perhaps it has something to do with the recent addition of the hashtag, but again, that seems to be a closed story. Facebook has announced that from now the hashtags, that seem to be so popular on Twitter, can be used on Facebook. This has made many users happy because a great number of the Facebook users have been using it, even it wasn’t one of Facebook’s official features.
The hashtag feature has the same purpose it has on Twitter and using it, you can see another feed that includes what pages or people has to say about a particular word or phrase. According to the social network, the users can search for hashtags through the search bar. You can compose a status from the hashtag feed.
Another feature was noticed but this time by developers. In Facebook’s code RSS feed was noticed. We all know that at the end of this month Google is closing its Google Reader and this might mean that Facebook is taking over the business. If Facebook’s team was working on something for the past few weeks, then RSS feed could be exactly what Facebook has on mind. We know that Facebook is capable of bringing RSS feed and people have been searching for Google Reader’s replacement ever since the sad announcement of shutting down. Introducing Facebook’s version of RSS feed can come in great time, no doubts about that.
Hashtags came in a crucial time for Facebook because as it was rumored by many sites, it has been losing teen audience who at the time, are really obsessed with Twitter and Instagram. Including hashtags might have been a copy-paste feature from Twitter but that’s how it is. This will definitely bring back the attention of the teenagers. Plus, announcing its RSS feed at this event could be a smart move for the future of the social network. Facebook has an enormous number of users and this product will have great chances in the search for a Google Reader replacement. We will see what happens on June 20.
