I feel like every tablet device that gets launched we tend to compare it with the iPads right away. We can all agree that these tablets from Apple are amazing but Google Nexus 7 is something that we should also consider as exceptional. It was just released today and it’s already available for preorders and according to Google, it should start shipping on July 30. Let’s see how it will perform when we put it against the iPad Mini. Let’s break them down to a single feature and bring a conclusion.

Screen

The new Nexus 7 features a 1,920 x 1080p resolution and 16:9-inch display while Apple’s iPad Mini features a larger 4:3; 7.9-inch screen at 1,024 x 768p resolution. The screen of this iPad Mini was bigger and pretty much better than the previous Nexus 7 version, but this new Nexus 7 takes away the advantage here. It has a really great color quality, viewing angles and perfect brightness.

Processor/RAM

This year’s Nexus 7 includes a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm S4 Processor by Snapdragon and 2GB of RAM. According to Eric Franklin, this tablet has the same graphic card like the Samsung Galaxy S4. We’ll give the advantage to this Nexus 7 this time because of its gaming graphics that has been improved with the new OpenGL ES 3.0 feature that adds extra graphic effect while playing a game.

The iPad Mini features an A5 processor which gives great performance – same as the iPad 2 and iPod Touch. It’s really capable for doing many things but it’s kind of old. It’s supported by 512MB of RAM.

Storage model and Price

Price is important for many tablet customers. When compared, you will see that the Nexus 7 offers better deal than Apple’s iPad Mini and it has better storage specs than the iPad Mini.

It was announced that the 16GB only Wi-Fi version will be selling for $229 against $329 for 16GB iPad Mini version. The bigger version, 32GB will be selling for only $269 while the 32GB iPad Mini version sell for $429. It’s worth mentioning that Google has made a 4G LTE ready model with 32GB storage that will go for $349 (unlocked). Apple’s iPad Mini tablet is carrier-specific and costs differently under different carrier.

Design

The Nexus 7 was launched only in black while the iPad Mini comes in white and black made of aluminum.

OS and Apps

Google Nexus 7 will get the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean that disappointed with its unchanged functionality. It includes only few add-ons like multi user settings feature, Bluetooth Smart that is low-energy feature. The iPad Mini runs on the iOS 6 with currently waiting the iOS 7 official release for the public. It runs all the Retina capable applications but this tablet doesn’t feature a Retina display technology. It already has Bluetooth 4.0 and iOS 7 will bring it better support for external devices.

We can agree that Apple has more apps available that are optimized for tablets than Google. You can find larger selection of games in the App Store while Google is making some efforts for better gaming selection on Google Play Store.

Cameras

Both tablets have similar cameras and we’ll yet do the testing to declare which one will take better photos.

Other features

The Nexus 7 comes equipped with MicroUSB and HDMI output and support for wireless charging. The iPad Mini includes the well-known lightening connector which is used for charging and syncing. It supports USB camera input, HDMI output and SD card camera if you purchase the additional parts.

Conclusion

From what we can see so far, Google Nexus 7 offers a better processor, screen and remains cheaper than the already one year old iPad Mini. However, this is a comparison between a device that is new and a device that is already one year old. The iPad Mini 2 might be right around the corner and it might bring way better feature and specs than this Nexus 7.

That’s it for now. We will update our story when we get our hands on this Nexus 7 device and do the first deeper review.

Currently there is no contest. The new Nexus 7 is much better than the iPad mini and cheaper.

I’m sure Apple can make the new iPad Mini better than the current Mini but can they make it better and cheaper?
