Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is a business laptop that has few security options and is really simple. It’s built really tough and Lenovo made it really light enough for an easy daily usage. It comes with a great keyboard and works well with its Windows 8 OS. The only lacking feature is that this laptop is made without an Intel processor and good graphic card but that’s why it’s meant for business. Let’s cut to the chase and begin with our detailed review.
Design and Features
If you were searching for a stylish business laptop you are not going to find that in this device. This doesn’t mean that this laptop has a boring look, it’s just that is really simple-looking. Its lid is made with carbon fiber and the bottom part has magnesium alloy. It measures 8.9 inches deep by 13 inches wide by 0.8 inch thick. It weighs only 3.6 pounds and we can agree that is perfectly thin and light for a laptop. The keyboard is resistant to spills as it passed the Mil STD tests for extreme vibration, humidity, pressure, dust and temperature.
This laptop has a strong construction and great security features that includes the Intel’s vPro tech with the well known Anti-Theft protection. It also comes equipped with Trusted Platform Chip, Smart Card readers and integrated fingerprint.
At first sight, you will think that this laptop is overpriced because of its specs and basic features. You must keep on mind that business laptops are more expensive because they are more secure and more durable than the consumer ones. This costs money and when you consider all the things you are getting it you will conclude that it’s really well priced. If you don’t need extra strength and security you’ll need to look somewhere else.
Just by looking at it, you will see that the design got updated, when compared to its predecessor. The keyboard remains the same as the past series of this product which is a great thing to see. What’s new there is the mic and volume controls which are integrated into the function keys. Lenovo also considered placing a Windows 8 shortcut keys which open viewing open apps, settings, search and viewing all apps, as well. These keys can be easily unlocked and locked. Pressing the Function (fn) button along with the spacebar you will notice that the keyboard’s backlight will go on and off.
Getting around Windows 8 without a touch screen can be difficult but Lenovo did a great job with its traditional TrackPoint placed between B, H and G keys. In order to offer a nice experience they imported 20+ gestures. Lenovo ditched the old TrackPoint buttons at the top of its touch pad and instead, you will get a center scroll button that marks left and right movement.
The rest of the touch-pad is well-made and you won’t feel any difference while using it on this computer or on other.
This laptop has a 14-inch screen with 1,600 x 900 pixel resolution. The screen looks really good and offers nice performance of the colors. With its 250-nit brightness level you will be able to fight off the reflections while you are working outside.
Battery and Performance
Battery life is really important option when you consider purchasing a business laptop. It’s more important than its processing and for this Lenovo claimed that this laptop is able to stay awake up to 9 hours, of course depending on your work time.
As of configuration options, this model has plenty of performance offering for everyday office work. However, if it’s not enough for you, you can opt in for a Haswell Intel Core i7 processor chip, equip the 500GB storage capacity and expand the RAM up to 12GB.
All in all, this laptop is a real business device that you will carry with yourself all the time. It’s made for work that requires lots of travelling, so if you find yourself in this category of people – you should definitely consider this laptop.
