A few months back, Samsung released a new handset called the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Basically, the main feature of this new product is that it is both an Android operated smartphone and a point-and-shoot camera. Curiously, a lot of people are talking about whether this handset can be the real deal for mobile photographers or if it is just another design experiment for Samsung.
The first issue is choosing the dominant side of the said gadget. Is it a smartphone with an attached camera accessory or a point-and-shoot device with smartphone abilities? For most people, it is the latter. In any way, compared to other smartphones, the Galaxy S4 Zoom has its own camera device to support its zoom features. This external bulge gives the gadget more battery capacity but only if used more as a smartphone than a camera. Positively, the battery is replaceable for users who have extra ones in their pockets.
The camera features of the Galaxy S4 Zoom generally include 1/2.33” sensor size, 16MP sensor, face and smile detection, touch focus, 10x optical zoom and optical image stabilization. In addition, it also has the ability to take 1080p@30fps videos. It has a two-stage physical shutter, a Xenon flash and even a tripod mount tucked under the bottom. This doesn’t mean that it can beat professional cameras but its specifications seem enough to exceed camera phone standards.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is powered by the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean technology with TouchWiz interface. Like the previous Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, it has the same 4.3 inches of screen with 540 x 960 HD screen resolution. It also comes with a 1.5GB RAM as well as 8GB of internal space. If the users prefer to add extra storage, it also supports a MicroSD card.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is something out of the ordinary products which clearly targeted mobile photographers. However, it seems that hands-on experience is not as satisfactory as expected. For some, the said gadget only offers a low resolution display and an average smartphone performance. Aside from the optical zoom, it has nothing else on its sleeve that could be more captivating than what it already was. Experts suggest that customers also check out devices with similar specifications on the market that are on the same price range.
