Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch: An Ultrabook For Only $700

Designed for the consumer market, Lenovo’s new IdeaPad U430 Touch is a show-stopper with features previously exhibited by the company’s premium laptops. It is an Ultrabook by nature and compared to other products, it is cheaper on so many levels. For people who think that this laptop is out of their budget range, then they should think again.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch has a dual Intel Core i5-4200U processor which is one of the units of the Haswell Core i5 family. It’s not a very powerful chip and yet it scored 199 from Notebook WorldBench 8.1. In addition, this laptop also has 4GB of DDR3/1600 memory. It is also sporting a 500GB hard drive that spins at 5400rpm. It sounds acceptable but a solid-state drive or SSD would have provided it a much better performance. However, it seems that this is another one of the company’s drawbacks because using an SSD would mean a much expensive price.

It is unfortunate that Lenovo had to cut back some premium features so that it would not overprice the IdeaPad U430 Touch. One of these features is the 14 inches of screen display. Meanwhile, the touchscreen panel can still display bright and respectable image quality but the resolution is set at only 1600 by 900 pixels. Another disadvantage of this computer is that it cannot perform intense and challenging games given that it only has GPU integrated in its central processing unit. According to BioShock Infinite, this laptop actually had the slowest performance compared to its rivals even with only 1024 by 768 pixels of resolution and low image quality.

On the right side of the computer, there are two USB 2.0 ports along with an SD Card reader. On the left is the sole USB 3.0 port with the audio jack, HDMI output, and wired ethernet port. The Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch comes with Wireless networking and Bluetooth connectivity which are made possible by Intel’s dual-band Wireless-N 7260 chipset. There are also speakers at the bottom but they are slightly lacking when it comes to the bass sound.

All in all, the computer weighs 4.2 pounds with an aluminum cover with an exceptionally styled backlit keyboard. It may be a little heavy but given the attractive and credible features, it doesn’t really matter that much. Also, it has a battery capacity which can last up to more than six hours. The $700 is definitely a bargain price.
