Alcatel is still making its way toward the top of the tablet industry and to improve its place in the market, it released the One Touch Evo 8HD to attract more consumers in trusting its brand. Since the introduction of tablets, it has been developing a number of products to compete in the market. On a different note, Asus has already been an established brand of computers and laptops and it is not surprising at all when it tried to make its own portable gadget. Recently, it just unveiled the Fonepad 7 that will be released soon in October. In this review, let us compare the two products and see what they got to offer.
Build and Design
The Alcatel One Touch Evo 8HD, in terms of its physical design, has 222 x 152.5 x 9 mm of dimensions and 435 g of weight which makes it considerably heavy. It is generally 8 inches tall and has a Candybar form factor.
On the other hand, the Asus Fonepad 7 is measured 120 x 196.8 x 10.5 mm and weighed 340 g. It is 7 inches tall and is available in black and white color options. The form factor is supported by Candybar.
In terms of the display, the One Touch Evo 8HD by Alcatel features 1024 x 768 pixels of screen resolution and 160 ppi pixel density courtesy of the IPS LCD technology. The screen has both capacitive and multi-touch capabilities along with a light sensor that comes with it.
Meanwhile, the Asus Fonepad 7 is going to have a similar IPS LCD technology but with a higher 800 x 1280 pixels of display resolution and 216 ppi pixel density. The screen with light sensors is capacitive as well as multi-touch.
Operating System and Hardware
The Alcatel One Touch Evo 8HD will have a Dual core 1600 MHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with an integrated graphics processor on its own central processing unit. It will run on an Android operating system version 4.2 Jelly Bean. The system memory comes at 1MB RAM DDR3 while the internal storage is at the maximum of 4GB. A memory card slot is available for storage expansion of up to 64GB. The battery is a Li – Ion 4150 mAh which is not replaceable by users.
Alternatively, the Fonepad 7 by Asus will have the same Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and an Intel Atom Z2560 chipset along with a Dual core 1600 MHz processor. It will have a different graphics processor which is the PowerVR SGX544MP2. The RAM is 1MB while built in storage is at a higher 8GB which can be expanded further through the memory card slot compatible with MicroSD and MicroSDHC to a maximum of 32GB. The battery which is replaceable is a Li – Polymer 3950 mAh.
Camera and General Multimedia
The camera featured in the Alcatel One Touch Evo 8HD will have 3MP with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. There‘s also a camcorder and a camera at the front which will have 2MP of quality. The additional multimedia features include an MP3 music player capable of background playing. There is also a video playback option which is compatible with MPEG4, H.263 and H.264 formats. This tablet also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Considering the current trend in camera technology, the Asus Fonepad 7 sports a rear camera with 5MP with auto focus as well as Geo-tagging. The camcorder has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 which means a 1080p HD viewing of the captured clips. The frontal camera, on the other hand, only has 1.2MP of quality. Additional multimedia options to explore a music player compatible with MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV as well as a video playback for MPEG4, H.263 and H.264 file types. It also comes with a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Alcatel One Touch Evo 8HD is larger and heavier which might present difficulty in bringing it to places. The only good thing about it is that the physical size also means better and more improved display features. It may have a smaller internal storage but at least the memory card slot can take on a larger space. On the other hand, the Asus Fonepad 7 has smaller and lighter built but lacking display settings. It does so much better in terms of hardware, internal storage, camera and multimedia options.
For individuals who are looking for gadgets with higher display features for watching purposes, the Alcatel One Touch Evo 8HD is the perfect device. But for customers who like mobile photography more than anything else, then the Asus Fonepad 7 is more functional and practical.
