Whether or not you need to replace your old smartphone, it is important that you are in the know of the current innovations happening in the technology industry. Just a few weeks ago, BlackBerry showed the world its newest creation which is a smartphone set to rival a few established names. On the other hand, HTC, as a forerunner of the latest and most unique devices in the market, is attracting a lot of attention to its products. Hence, this review will tackle the two devices – HTC Butterfly S and BlackBerry Z30 – which created a lot of buzz against its competitors. Read below for more information.
The Pros of HTC Butterfly S
The HTC Butterfly S is another member of the new generation of smartphones by the Taiwanese manufacturer that is meant to cater gadget lovers everywhere. This time, it highlights its 3200 mAh battery which can last for at least 23 hours of talk time. It’s a pretty impressive number for a remodeled version of a smartphone. As you can see, the Butterfly S is a byproduct of its predecessor which is the original Butterfly. Anyway, even with that, the Butterfly S is a competitive product on its own. It contains a powerful central processing unit that works perfectly with its HTC Sense and BlinkFeed platforms. And although it only has a 4MP camera, it still works well in situations with low light and users can still maximize its photo-taking capabilities. In addition, the best upgrade that HTC probably did in this device is putting the BoomSound speakers up front. This means that the audio output will be facing the user and not the sides or back.
The Pros of BlackBerry Z30
The BlackBerry Z30 is physically larger than its rival product but since it is only by a few units, it doesn’t really make a lot of difference. This means that users can still very much carry this device around without having to be influenced by its heaviness. In terms of the operating system, this device is sporting its own BlackBerry OS 10.2 which would present users a different kind of experience but with a similar convenience. It comes along with the BlackBerry Link software to let users sync their data from their computers to mobile phones. In a similar manner, it also features its own messaging system which is only exclusive to BlackBerry handset owners. To help users with vision disabilities, BlackBerry incorporated the Screen Reader and Magnify for a more functional use of their device. Meanwhile, the manufacturer is highlighting that this device has an 8MP camera which can take great photos in different conditions. Add to that its wowing battery life of up to 25 hours.
Lacking Features and Needed Improvements
Consumer preferences are always important when crafting devices such as smartphones and other gadgets. It adds critical thinking and criticisms which can definitely improve future products. In respect of this, it seems that some users and even experts are feeling that the HTC Butterfly S should have a different design technology. Unfortunately for this device, the plastic shell that covers it collects fingerprints and creates smudges. Correspondingly, even though this is just a spin-off from a previous model, HTC should have developed its camera even further. A 4MP quality is already pretty low these days.
On the other hand, the BlackBerry Z30 does not come without faults of its own. The most notable is the fact that it has a low screen resolution of only 1280 x 720 pixels. Given the high camera pixels and even larger screen, we still don’t know why its manufacturer was not able to integrate a higher resolution than that. A similar thing goes with the pixel density which should be improved and increased for a better display feature. Also, it may not be an issue for some but BlackBerry should innovate and develop a new battery specification which will increase its life. Smartphone manufacturers should know that consumers always want to use their devices in the longest period of time.
Pricing and Availability
The HTC Butterfly S is available in different online shopping websites. The unlocked version has a maximum retail price of less than $700 while the unit which comes with a plan has a lesser and much cheaper value.
Unfortunately, the BlackBerry Z30 is still to be released in stores in the future. There is no information about the expected price tag of this smartphone but we are hoping that it will be as affordable as others.
The Bottom Line
The HTC Butterfly S as well as BlackBerry Z30 exhibit features which can really attract gadget lovers everywhere. The major differences that these two devices showcases includes the camera megapixels, display resolution and battery life. However, the deal-breaker here is the fact that the Butterfly S does not have LTE connectivity – mainly because it was first released in Asia. If you can live with that, choose HTC. But if you can’t, then choose Z30 – only you still have to wait a little longer before it is released.
