ZTE V81 Android Tablet Reviewed: Does it Measure Up?

Another Android-powered tablet has entered the tablet scene and will soon join 8-inch tablets in the race. The ZTE Jelly Bean tablet was revealed on its website before the Mobile World Congress and showed ZTE has no plans in limiting their company to smartphone manufacturing. In fact, it seems the iPad Mini got another competitor and perhaps its closest look-alike. Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is also going to be listed as ZTE V81’s biggest competitors.

Let’s see what ZTE V81 is all about.

So, what we have here is an 8-inch tablet that’s decent-looking and sports the same aspect ratio as Apple’s iPad Mini and the same display resolution. Are we looking at a tablet that’s threatening to replace the awfully expensive iPad Mini? Or it’s going to be labeled as a device that tries to copy Apple’s iPad Mini?

The V81 tablet has a design typical for ZTE products. We can’t compare its look with the one the iPad Mini has, but we can definitely compare its specs (at least the list of specs that have been revealed to date). However, its simple design didn’t get much positive criticism and people think it’s rather boring.

ZTE V81 has the iPad Mini’s aspect ratio of 4:3 and the display resolution of 1024×768 pixels. Its 8-inch HD display is pretty capacitive and responsive. The tablet packs a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor and just 1GB of RAM. It comes with 4GB of internal memory storage.

With a thickness of about 11mm, this tablet is probably not very light. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is announced to offer its users the possibility to expand memory up to 32GB with a microSD card slot. Its rear-facing camera has 2MP and its front-facing camera has 0.3MP, which is kind of acceptable for a tablet device, but not very common for most good tablets out there.

A 3700mAh battery is featured inside the device and the specs list also includes USB and HDMI ports. Other features that have been revealed are a dual-band Wi-Fi, HSPA, Bluetooth and GPS.

The Chinese company announced the tablet a couple of days ago, but we’re not sure when exactly is it going to hit shelves. However, we bet it’s going to be very soon. Pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s probably going to be offered for an affordable price tag. The price and the availability are going to be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Although ZTE is a China-based company, there’s no doubt that its products, including the ZTE V81, are going to hit shelves in US. The company is working hard on entering the US market, so we expect to see the V81 tablet in the US in very near future.

Also, a detailed introduction on the tablet and its pricing supposed to be disclosed at the Mobile World Congress, which is happening between 25 and 28 February in Barcelona, Spain. We’ll wait for information from the MWC to make a definite conclusion for the device, so stay tuned.
